Alumni Show Announcement! Alma Mater: Methods

CCA Alumni Exhibition June 15 – July 26 2019

My piece for this show is three photographs of the “porn floor,” a collage of my favorite of my own smutty photographs glued to the cement floor of my academic art studio during the 2015-2016 MFA years. It began as an exercise for a book idea, then merged into a performance piece (Exit Piece, 2015, unpublished), then the backdrop for dust sculptures and self portraits (when it was extended to the wall) and eventually was forgotten under my work table: just a normalised part of my work space. When I left the studio, I poured cement grey paint over the entire area and let it spread and dry, allowing the studio to once again “feel” clean and untouched. I consider this piece an “embed” and would have remained there longer had the school not torn down the graduate building for more student housing. The work has likely been recycled and molded into the foundation for the new dorms or destroyed and removed from the area entirely. In conclusion, my grandmother does work like this with plaster and clay – leaves things places and traces the weathering and such – I feel connected to her somehow in this process!

Many of these photographs appear in full in my magazine project, which stemmed from this methodology of approaching my archives with poetic construction in mind.

For the second iteration of the college’s biennial series of alumni exhibitions programming, CCA Exhibitions and the CCA Alumni Association will partner to highlight the idea of process within the practices of recent alumni from across the college’s four divisions: Fine Arts, Design, Architecture, and Humanities and Sciences. The exhibition will explore shared threads in artistic practices of sketching, note taking, modeling, mapping, drafting, and rendering. These process-based methods expose the pathways creative individuals depend upon to obtain a final product or idea. By celebrating this amorphousness through the form of an exhibition, Alma Mater: Methods will move beyond what is often exhibited within the white cube—finality, succinct expression, monetary value—and will instead prioritize a thinking-through-making approach that is shared among the college’s creative communities and disciplines. It is here where conversations begin, new connections form, and low stakes are valued.

This exhibition is co-curated by Beth Abrahamson (MFA Design 2015), Sarah Hobstetter (MArch 2010), Mik Gaspay (MFA 2011), and Tanya Gayer (MA Curatorial Practice, Visual and Critical Studies 2016).
